Description

This book examines the history of the LeMoyne College Goodwill Ambassadors, an all-Black intercollegiate debate team at Memphis's only HBCU that debated with and defeated teams from prestigious and internationally during segregation. Going beyond a history of a single team, the book addresses the political role of HBCUs in the pre-civil rights movement, the role of debate clubs in Black education and race relations, and white reactions to educated African Americans nationally and internationally at the time.
